Putting furniture into storage is simple, but you need to prepare it properly. If you rush it, furniture can get scratched, marked, damp, dusty or broken.
Clean everything first
Do not store dirty furniture. Wipe down wood, vacuum sofas and chairs, and make sure everything is completely dry before it goes into storage.
Take furniture apart where possible
Remove table legs, bed frames, shelves and loose parts. Put screws and fittings in a labelled bag and tape the bag to the item it belongs to.
Cover the furniture
Use moving blankets, clean sheets, cardboard and bubble wrap. Protect corners and edges. Do not stick strong tape directly onto painted, polished or leather furniture.
Protect sofas and mattresses
Vacuum fabric items first. Use breathable covers for sofas and proper mattress bags for mattresses. Do not stack heavy boxes on top of soft furniture.
Stack sensibly
Heavy items go low. Fragile items go high or separate. Leave a small walkway if you may need to access anything later.
Simple rule: clean it, dry it, cover it, protect the corners and stack it sensibly.
